Assignment 3 Part A
INSTAGRAM.
The word Instagram, the amalgam of ‘’instant camera’’ and ‘’telegram’’ is an application which allows me to edit and upload photos and short videos via a mobile application. The platform is designed to encourage social interactions where users can follow each other and view posts made by each other via ’feeds’. Users can add a caption to each of their post and use hash-tags.
Originally designed (like other social media sites) as a way to connect with others, using Instagram daily has worked as an effective motivation to the improvement of my health and fitness life. By following pictures of fitness instructors like: @andreideiu_ . I keep up daily with workout activities which are posted on my feeds by the fitness instructor.
Instagram and photography is helping in constructing the ‘Third World experience’.
‘’Angela Fisher told reporters that her six-day visit to the rural Malawian village of Neno has completely changed her profile picture on Facebook. ‘As soon as I walked into that dusty, remote town and the smiling children started coming up to me, I just knew my Facebook profile photo would change forever’, said Fisher. ‘not after the experience of taking such incredible pictures with my arms around those small African children’s shoulders. ( The Onion, 2014)’’. According to the article, Voluntouring on Facebook and Instagram: Photography is constructing the ‘Third World’ experience. Using interviews with 16 voluntourists, it shows how the wide spread of social media has a great influence on Voluntourism for the better.
However, the frequent use of Instagram increases the risk of redundancy in individuals causing them to be unproductive. The constant engagement on the social media site requires one to be seated at a spot for as long as possible.
According to the International Journal of Computer Applications Technology and Research Volume 5, “Today, its not clear that who the ‘’strangers’’ are especially in the field of social media which may lead to kidnapping, murder, robbery due to the easy access of details on the site”. The high level of users and free flow of media on Instagram makes it easy for bad activities to be done.
Instagram serves as a platform for entertaining myself and also a way I reach out to my loved ones on a daily basis. Being an international student, making calls using a network provider is expensive. Using Instagram, I can text everyone I need to on a daily basis with the use of a WiFi.
Over the past 5 days, I have consumed 661MB, sent 98 photos and spent the total of 9hours with Wednesday the highest at 3h 54m.
Instagram is not only a social media site but a networking tree which connects people together in one place, and at the same time.
